A proxy server acts as a gateway between you and the Internet. It hides your real IP address from the resource server, adding an extra layer of privacy. It is mainly used to bypass filters and censorship. If you’ve ever been part of a company or organization, you’ve most likely used a proxy server. This is the most popular way to avoid data leaks and various types of fraud. But what does the word “proxy” mean? And what are the benefits of using different types of proxies?
Most people buy proxy to stay slightly more secure on an open WiFi network or to unblock site content. However, they do not quite understand the purpose of the proxy server. In fact, proxies can do a lot more than just unblock websites.
All proxies are divided into two large groups:
- Transparent. With this scheme, traffic is redirected to the proxy server through the router. The main advantage of this type is the ability to enjoy all the capabilities of a proxy without having to change the settings.
- Back. This is a proxy that is needed to replenish the network load balance between servers and to increase the security of the Internet connection.
In addition to this classification, there is one more:
- HTTP. This is the most versatile and demanded type of proxy used for most tasks.
- Socks. The thing is that only some programs are compatible with it. To use this type of proxy, you need to install additional software in your browser.
- CGI. Also known as anonymizers. They have one significant drawback: you can interact with them only through a browser.
- FTP. They are a type of proxy that is often used in corporate networks and acts as one of the tools of a comprehensive system for protecting equipment from outside threats.
